Although it was Francisco Tamagno (1851-?) who originated the Pierrot character for Cointreau (borrowing the idea for the lorgnon from founder Edouard Cointreau's eyewear), it is Jean Mercier, Cointreau's grandson, whose images are indelibly associated with the clear colored orange perfumed liqueur. In 1925, he would redesign the initial Tamagno drawing, creating less of a caricature without changing any of the major elements of the original. Though this represents the initial Mercier design he executed for the company, it would be over ten years before he returned to put his uniquely personal stamp on the Cointreau Pierrot. The artist, master of the French film poster, remained active until his recent death, two weeks before a retrospective of his 70 year career in posters opened at the Bibliothèque Forney in Paris.
