| La Dame aux Camelias is an enduring classic that intrigued all great actresses ever since the 1848 novel was first adapted for the theater in 1852, and Sarah Bernhardt played it hundreds of times throughout her long career. This poster was created for the September, 1896 revival at her own theater, and became itself a classic, very possibly the best poster ever for this durable play. Mucha's tender concept of the actress as a fragile heroine is underscored by the gentle pastel background with stars, the soulful pose, and of course the eponymous camellias. | |
