Pettitjean was an often exhibited landscape painter whose work won him numerous jury prizes, election to the Legion of Honor in 1892 and a place in the permanent collections of museums throughout France. In what we suspect was a rare foray into graphic art, he created this poster for the Parisian humor magazine, graced by a reader who is obviously tickled by its contents. Pettitjean certainly knew whom to emulate: the serpentine forms and caricaturistic treatment of the face show his admiration for Aubrey Beardsley and the early work of Leonetto Cappiello.
